Something Else - Painting & Fiber Exhibition

Something Else is a solo exhibition featuring paintings, weavings and fiber work from Jia Zeng. The exhibition is from Thursday, October 11th to Sunday the 14th, 2018. It opens from 11 am to 5 pm. The opening reception will hold from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, October 11th at Sulfur Studio – 2301 Bull St, Savannah, GA, 31401.

Something else is what hasn’t been defined yet. It is uncertainty. Something is still finding its definition. It can’t be categorized and has to put it aside. It is confusion. It could thrive or decline. It is a middle place between something and nothing.

Zeng says, “Painting is not only in the physical aspect but also in the spiritual. It is a conversation between the work and the artist. The method and the materials are not the most important thing. Every material has its limitation. The limitation of the paint is flat. That of fiber is that it is not as flexible as paint. Touching is an important experience to view a fiber art while painting is more about a visual experience. The experience of viewing fiber art is usually less harmful and less struggle. But it doesn’t mean that it is less important than painting. The conversation between painting and fiber is the something else.”

The exhibition is finding the answer to what are we really making? Is it something, nothing or something else? Maybe back to an old question – are we painting or crafting?

Jia Zeng (b.1995, Xiamen, China) received a B.F.A in painting in 2018 summer from Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, GA. She has traveled to Hong Kong and France over the past year, showing her work in Savannah and Lacoste. Her painting deals with emotions, using metaphorical and poetic perception. She combines the fiber elements and the found objects in weaving and her small work. Zeng will be moving back to her home country in 2018 fall.
